Time. Not enough of it,and the time we have passes too quickly. We only truly understand our current place in time with the depth of understanding needed to function and survive. And yet we judge others and their ability to deal with their place in time. We judge those who are too young to get it, those who are too old and who have already lost it. Can we judge their decisions without an understanding of their place in time? Lack of time impacts our ability to make good decisions and too much time creates an indifference to sound responsible decision making. Time.
I think of my life as being divided into seven year parcels and each parcel aligns to a month. The first seven years of life are January - new, fresh, pure, outwardly simple, yet very complex. Young adulthood aligns to the beginning of spring - new emotional life -the start of a new phase of life. Early twenties - late March, early April. Green.
So here I am... smack in the middle of August. I'm not very fond of the month of August, and I'm not that wild about this stage of my life. August - you're hot and tired of summer. You're anxious to move on with the color and flair of the autumn months. You are done with summer and fun and need to move onto the next stage. Not much happens in August. Never has, never will. People check out in August - nobody misses you if you vacate August. No major decisions are needed - none anticipated.
Life is not all that much different in your August stage. Your family is grown and working on establishing themselves. Your career had better peaked already or you may find that it won't. Your body starts to tire and starts to articulate your sins from past years. It is time to initiate something new and yet we want to so heavily rely on the familiar. You are settled in your dwelling, settled in relationships, settled, settled, settled.
Now is the time to prepare to move on. The dull greens, faded yellows and greys of late summer must be replaced with new colors. The familiar will not get you to September, you must venture to a new place on your own. It is time to find something new. Approach life in a new way. New priorities, new activities, new resolutions. NEW! Challenge yourself, challenge the familiar, challenge the same-old, same-old. Do some good. For others, for your mind, for your body, for your career, for your family. Think of community - think beyond self and family. Fortify existing communities and participate in new ones. What is important? Think about your priority and then do something about it. Clean up the stuff the holds you back. Remember that it is just stuff. Help yourself, help others.
Forget August and prepare for the time of your life!
Blog to self as the dreaded 2008 exits and the newness of 2009 approaches. Stop belly-aching and make it work.
